Abstract
A summary of the current knowledge on the subject of internal friction is presented. An experimental investigation of the variation of specific damping capacity with torsional stress for three metals is described. It is found that the specific damping capacity can be represented. Calculations are made of the effect on specific damping capacity of type of stress and of non-uniform distribution of stress; the calculations are compared with the available experimental data. An expression is proposed to describe the manner in which energy dissipation varies with stress amplitude
